At the height of fire season, a blaze near Cuesta Grade charred more than 2,000 acres. The fire jumped a containment line, and Santa Margarita was evacuated as flames burned to within a quarter of a mile from homes in the small North County community.

But San Luis Obispo County firefighters came to the rescue. Working around the clock to keep the town safe, they squelched the fire before it could do any lasting damage.

As regional credit unions gathered to support firefighters in Northern California, we decided to recognize the efforts of those here at home in a special fundraiser for International Credit Union Day.

ICU Day seeks to raise awareness of the credit union movement, and this year’s theme, “People Helping People,” couldn’t have been more timely. On Oct.15, CoastHills worked with our members to support the SLO County Firefighters Benevolent Association, a fund that supports the families of firefighters and fire victims after catastrophic events. With every credit card purchase, we pledged a donation towards the Association. And we were so inspired by our members’ response that we decided to double it.

Last month, we happily delivered a donation of $1,325 to the local fire station, but the giving doesn’t have to end there. If you'd like to get involved with the cause, please contact SLO County Firefighters Benevolent Association fund president Jason Potts at slocofba@gmail.com
