Helping the Hungry

Here's an eye-opening statistic: In San Luis Obispo County alone, 44,000 people wake up wondering where their next meal is coming from. Many times, these folks have to choose between paying a utility bill and going grocery shopping.

Fortunately, our local food banks have stepped in to provide much-needed relief.

Last month, the CoastHills Community Foundation reached out to food banks in all five counties of our field of membership—from Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura—and donated $250 to each.

When the food banks combine their buying power, the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County can turn a $1 donation into $10 worth of food, Executive Administrator Malinda Diaz said.

The holidays might be the busiest season for food donations, explained Diaz, but there’s constant need for volunteers at warehouses and distribution sites. Additionally, cash donations are always welcome. To get involved, visit the California Association of Food Banks and contact your nearest member location.

And if you know of a local nonprofit organization in need of support, CoastHills offers Community Action Sponsorships of up to $500. Just fill out this Sponsorship Request Application, and our Community Foundation will do the rest.
