Pulling back the curtain on our grand plans

CoastHills HQ Entry-Color

Pardon our dust. It'll clean up nicely.
You may have seen the news or read about CoastHills Credit Union's plans to build a brand new HQ from the ground up at the corner of Betteravia and 101 in Santa Maria.

Now, take an inside look at what that means for you, our members and employees.

CoastHills has seen rapid growth over the past decade. Thanks to the trust and financial relationships of our member-owners, the Credit Union's total assets topped $1 billion for the first time ever in December.

We're proud to say we are now the largest locally owned financial institution in San Luis Obispo County and the second-largest in Santa Barbara County.

With that growth has come more jobs, more giving and a stronger commitment to providing members with a first-rate banking experience — whether you're in a branch, on your computer at home or with your phone on the go.

Growth and technology are two of the most exciting aspects highlighting all the details of the new HQ. It will sit right at the entry way of a neighborhood city leaders are calling Santa Maria's "front door."

  • The three-story building will have 90,000 square feet of floor space. That's more than double the size of CoastHills' current headquarters in Vandenberg Village

  • It will be part of the Enos Ranchos project. Our corner of it will be called the CoastHills Center and will also include Lowe's Home Improvement, dining and retail options. You'll also see Costco, auto dealerships, residential space and a city park in the rest of the development.

  • More than 150 CoastHills employees will immediately call the new building home. The Credit Union currently has 230 staff members and plans to add another 150 new jobs in the next decade.

  • We won't need all that space right away. The second floor will be available for local subleasing, and an auditorium with meeting space for up to 300 can be used for events, too.

  • Taking cues from our branches of the future in Nipomo and Thousand Oaks, the bottom floor will feature a flagship branch. It'll be stocked with our brand new touchscreen interactive banking system where you can conduct your business privately or video chat with one of our member services officers.

  • Check out the video below to take in the progressive design. That and the construction are being contracted through Specialty Construction, Inc., a San Luis Obispo-based company that's served the Central Coast for 23 years.

Showing a building splashed with the deep blues and pistachio green that make up CoastHills' vibrant brand, this 3D rendering gives a great look at how our new corporate headquarters will appear when completed.

Keeping things local was a priority for us.

“We ask our business members all across the coast to trust a local financial institution with their business,” CoastHills President/CEO Jeff York said. “We put that same trust in Specialty, a local firm. And I think people are going to be very impressed with the result of this local partnership.”

Why now? Why Santa Maria?

CoastHills started 58 years ago as Vandenberg Air Force Base Federal Credit Union, and it was created to meet the financial needs of Vandenberg Air Force Base military personnel and civilian employees.

Since then, the Credit Union has stayed true to its roots, maintaining a branch on base, and has also opened its membership up to the entire Central Coast community. Most recently, members voted to expand our field of membership to include all of the counties of Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura.

With such a wide area to serve, it was important to have a headquarters that was centrally located and easy to get to. The convenience of this new location is ideal in both aspects.

That doesn't mean we're lessening our commitment to servicing members in Lompoc. In addition to the base branch, our Lompoc branch on H Street isn't going anywhere, and we'll continue to have a branch presence in Vandenberg Village.

The groundbreaking of the new headquarters will happen this summer, and completion of the project is scheduled for late 2018.

Like every decision we make, each step toward opening the new headquarters will be made with the best interest of our members at heart.
